Deceptively now, in our very time, man and yes! machines work towards it.
And there is very good reason to believe that it will turn out no better for us than Columbus' landing in America did for Native Americans... this is the fate of a native population when a technologically superior one arrives.
Now mankind is the vulnerable native population, and sentient machines - which are coming! - are the technologically superior beings.
